On 2nd December, 1916, 16th Middlesex of 86 Brigade, 29th Division moved into the front line trenches near Lesboeufs on the Somme. The Battle of the Somme was now officially over and normal trench warfare conditions were now the order of the day. This of course meant regular artillery action by both sides and although the Battalion Diary goes into no detail at all, it is likely that it was shell fire that caused the death of William Ambrose on 3rd December. |
